-નગીનદાસ સંઘવી
યુરી ગાગારીનથી શરુ થયેલી અવકાશયાત્રા અને આર્મસ્ટ્રૉંગની ચન્દ્ર સફર પછી વીજ્ઞાનના પ્રભાવે માનવીના જ્ઞાન અને અવકાશી સમ્બન્ધોના સીમાડા સતત વીસ્તરતા જાય છે. હવે તો ભારત અને ચીન જેવા એશીયાઈ દેશો પણ આ અવકાશી ઉપાસનામાં જોડાયા છે. વીશ્વના સ્વરુપ અને તેની પ્રક્રીયાઓ અંગેના જ્ઞાનમાં સતત ઉમેરા થઈ રહ્યા છે. અણુથી પણ નાના કણને નજરોનજર નીહાળવા માટે વરસોની જહેમત અને અબજો રુપીયાનો ખર્ચ પણ લેખે લાગ્યો છે. વીશ્વને સમજવાની આ મથામણમાં સત્યેન બોઝ અને અશોક સેન જેવા ભારતીય ભૌતીકશાસ્ત્રીઓએ પોતાનો ફાળો નોંધાવ્યો છે. સોળ કરોડ રુપીયાનું રુસી પારીતોષીક મેળવનાર અશોક સેનનો સીદ્ધાન્ત હજુ પ્રયોગશાળામાં પુરવાર થયો નથી; પણ ગાણીતીક સમીકરણોની ગેડ બરાબર બેસી જાય છે.
આવા શુદ્ધ વીજ્ઞાનના વહેવારુ ઉપયોગમાં ઘણો સમય લાગી જાય છે. અવકાશી યાત્રા માટે વપરાયેલ કેટલાંક ઉપકરણો આમજનતા પણ ઓછાં–વધતાં પ્રમાણમાં અથવા બદલાયેલાં સ્વરુપે વાપરી શકે છે; પણ વીશ્વના સ્વરુપ કે આદી બંધારણના જ્ઞાનનો વહેવારુ ઉપયોગ સીધી રીતે કરી શકાતો નથી.
જગદીશચન્દ્ર બોઝ, રામાનુજન, સર સી. વી. રામન, સત્યેન બોઝ, હરગોવીન્દ ખુરાના, અશોક સેન જેવા વીશ્વ વીખ્યાત વીજ્ઞાનશાસ્ત્રીઓ ભારતીય સમાજમાં છે, પણ ભારતીય સમાજમાં વીજ્ઞાન અથવા વૈજ્ઞાનીક અભીગમનો લગભગ સમ્પુર્ણ અભાવ છે. આમજનતા હજુ આજે પણ વહેમો, ચમત્કારો અને જાતજાતની ચીત્રવીચીત્ર માન્યતાઓમાં શ્રદ્ધા ધરાવે છે. શીતળાનો રોગ દુનીયામાંથી લગભગ નાબુદ થઈ ગયો છે; પણ શીતળા માતાની પુજા કે શીતળા સાતમને આપણે પડતી મુકતા નથી. ઉલટું વીજ્ઞાનનાં સાધનો આવી અવૈજ્ઞાનીક માન્યતાઓના સમર્થનમાં અને ફેલાવા માટે વાપરવામાં આવે છે. અત્યાધુનીક તંત્રજ્ઞાન અને ઉપકરણોના વીનીયોગથી છપાતાં અને વપરાતાં અખબારો અને ટેલીવીઝન, મોબાઈલ ફોન કે કમ્પ્યુટરો પણ જુનવાણી અને ભયાનક વહેમોને મજબુત બનાવવામાં વપરાયાં છે. ટેલીવીઝન ભુતકથાઓને લોકપ્રીય બનાવે છે અને કમ્પ્યુટરો કુંડળીઓ બનાવવા માટે વપરાય છે.
અભણ અથવા અર્ધજ્ઞાની બાવા–સાધુઓ–મહન્તો–સ્વામીઓ–ગુરુઓ અન્ધશ્રદ્ધા નીવારણના કામમાં સૌથી મોટાં વીધ્નરુપ બની ગયાં છે. તેમાં એક સૌથી હાસ્યાસ્પદ સંસ્થા પાલીતાણામાં કાર્યરત છે. ખગોળના જુના ગ્રંથોને વળગી બેઠેલા આ સંસ્થાના સંશોધકો વીજ્ઞાનશાસ્ત્રીઓને ‘લુચ્ચા અને લબાડ’ ઠરાવવાની કડાકુટ કરતા રહે છે. નીલ આર્મસ્ટ્રૉંગની ચન્દ્રયાત્રા સમ્પુર્ણત: બનાવટી છે અને ચન્દ્ર સુધી કોઈ પહોંચ્યું જ નથી તેવું છાતી ઠોકીને જણાવવામાં આવે છે. આધુનીક ખગોળશાસ્ત્ર અનુસાર પૃથ્વી ગોળ છે અને સુર્યની ફરતે ઘુમે છે અને પોતાની ધરી પર પણ ઘુમે છે તેવો સર્વ સ્વીકાર્ય મત પણ તેમને માન્ય નથી. આ મતને સાબીત કરી આપનાર વ્યક્તીને કરોડ રુપીયાનું ઈનામ આપવાની જાહેરાતો વારમ્વાર થાય છે; પણ આવી ચકાસણી કદી કરવામાં આવતી નથી અને ઈનામ કદી કોઈને અપાયું નથી. સુરતની ‘સત્ય શોધક સભા’ના પુર્વપ્રમુખ અને રૅશનાલીસ્ટ ડૉ. બી. એ પરીખસાહેબે આધુનીક સીદ્ધાન્ત સાચો પુરવાર કરવા માટેની ચેલેન્જ ઉપાડી લીધી; પણ આ બાબતમાં તેમણે લખેલા બે રજીસ્ટર્ડ પત્રોમાંના મુદ્દાઓ વીશે કશો ઉત્તર અપાયો નથી, તેવું તેમણે જાતે આ લખનારને કહ્યું છે. ભારતીય નાગરીકો માટે વૈજ્ઞાનીક અભીગમ કેળવવાની ફરજ બન્ધારણમાં આમેજ કરવામાં આવી છે; પણ તેનો અમલ થાય તો આવી સંસ્થાઓ બન્ધ કરવી પડે. પણ, બન્ધારણ રુઢીચુસ્ત ધર્મગુરુઓ સામે કામીયાબ બની શકતું નથી. આ બાબતમાં ચીન આપણા કરતાં વધારે નસીબવાન અને પ્રગતીશીલ છે. ચીની વીજ્ઞાનશાસ્ત્રીઓનાં નામ આપણે જાણતા નથી, તે આપણું અજ્ઞાન દર્શાવે છે. ચીન માત્ર આર્થીક વીકાસની દોડમાં આપણાથી આગળ છે તેવું માની લેવાનું કારણ નથી. લંડનમાં ચાલી રહેલા ઓલીમ્પીક રમતોત્સવમાં ચીની ખેલાડીઓ અનેક ક્ષેત્રમાં સૌથી પહેલા નંબરે ઉભા છે અને સૌથી વધારે ચન્દ્રકો જીતે છે.
જગતની પ્રાચીન સંસ્કૃતીમાં યવન સંસ્કૃતી બૌદ્ધીક ક્ષેત્રે અને રમતગમતના ક્ષેત્રે પણ સર્વશ્રેષ્ઠ સંસ્કૃતી છે. આજનાં વીજ્ઞાનશાસ્ત્રોમાં વપરાતા અગણીત શબ્દો ગ્રીક ભાષાના છે. આ રમતોત્સવને ઓલીમ્પીક કહેવાય છે; કારણ કે ગ્રીકોનાં સર્વોચ્ચ દેવ ઝીયસ(Zeus)ના મુખ્ય મન્દીરની ટેકરી ઓલીમ્પીકની તળેટીમાં આ ઉત્સવની શરુઆત થઈ. આપણે આ કક્ષાએ પહોંચવું હશે તો બધાં ક્ષેત્રોમાં અને હરેક ક્ષણે વીજ્ઞાનશાસ્ત્ર પ્રમાણે ચાલીને દરેક જાતની અન્ધશ્રદ્ધાનો સમુળગો ઉચ્છેદ કરવો પડશે.

It is indeed eye-opening to see the tragic level of misinformation and anti-science in this world!
I just read the enclosed PDF advertisement. Are you sure that it is not an April fool’s joke? If it is real, then it is heartbreaking on many different levels.
One, that there are still so many people in the world that do not understand basic scientific facts. These are not some poor uneducated folks that are too preoccupied with fulfilling basic needs to explore science. No, these are relatively well off and well read people who just choose to willfully ignore hard facts.
What makes it worse is the strong pride in the willful ignorance. When they claim in the ad “… વિદ્યાર્થીઓ જો સાદી સમજણ નો ઉપયોગ કરે તો પણ ખ્યાલ આવશે કે પૃથ્વી જો પોતાની ધરી પર એક કલાકના ૧૦૦૦ માઈલની ગતિથી ફરી રહી હોય તો પૃથ્વી ઉપરના મનુષ્યો … સ્થિર રહી શકે નહિ.”, it at once demonstrates poor understanding of science, and along with it, unjustifiable confidence in their own misunderstanding.
Another sad co-incidence is that this comes out now – just around the sad death of Neil Armstrong, the first man on moon, just when the whole world is re-celebrating this wondrous achievement of the human race.
A fourth reason this is heartbreaking is that the organization clearly appears to be funded by religious institutions. I imagine that somewhere out there is a hard-working science teacher who has spend all her life teaching children scientific facts and opened many eyes to the wonders of astronomy. She just happens to be religious (not અંધશ્રદ્ધાળુ, just simple god-fearing decent human being) and so whenever she goes to the temple, she drops some money in the collection box, hoping to give something back to the world. She hopes that the temple trust will use the money to build hospitals, or to give food to the hungry, or do some good to the society. Little does she know that they are wasting that hard-earned money on ridiculous experiments and on publishing meaningless garbage as ‘scientific fact.’ Does that does not make us sad?
But maybe I am mistaken. Maybe all of that research and publishing is funded by some well-meaning millionaires. However, there still remains one truly heartbreaking irony in this. The ad talks about the મુની who is the author of these books. By the description provided in the ad, he clearly appears to be a brilliant person, with a hunger for knowledge. If he had studied real science, who knows what he could have achieved! Perhaps he would have identified breakthroughs rivaling those of Bose and Sen, perhaps he may have solved the energy crisis or perhaps he may have found the cure for cancer! But alas! All that potential was utterly wasted because his parents (well-meaning and decent people, I’m sure) pushed him at the tender age of 6 to give up real world and go into a world that is defined by absolutely ridiculous stories masquerading as fact. He still worked hard – as we can see, he has conducted many experiments and written 30 books! But his indoctrination into the dogma of flat earth has completely wasted his entire life.
And there must be countless others like this! I find this utter waste of human potential to be immensely heartbreaking.

Dear Shri Dave,
You draw attention to an extremely important point : Religion in India robs the country of a lot of potential human talent—- (forget material resources for a moment, though they too are huge). Examples are well known. Just think of what Vivekanand or Arvind Ghosh could have done for the country if they were not snatched away by Religion or Adhyatma. Keep writing please. Completely agreed! The waste of human potential is simply staggering! Also, while I completely agree to your point about Vivekanad or Arvind Ghosh, at least they made the decision as adults. It is still tragic, to be sure! But it is doubly tragic when a 6 year old bright child is snached away by religious dogma and forced to waste an entire life defending a flat earth! Breaks my heart!
I find a great meeting of minds here on Abhivyakti and hope to remain active – time permitting! Many thanks!

Nobody knows what Vivekanand would have done if not what he did. As for Arvind Ghosh, as I know, was a radical freedom fighter. There was a warrant on his head, for making bomb, by then British Government. That is why he fled to French colony Pondicherry. If not, he may have been caught and sentenced severely by British.
One thing is for sure, they would not have been as popular as they are today if it was not for religion/Adhyatma.

અરવિંદ ઘોષ સશસ્ત્ર ક્રાન્તિમાં માનતા હતા અને વૉરન્ટથી બચવા માટે ફ્રેન્ચ વસાહત પોંડીચેરી ચાલ્યા ગયા. સ્વામી વિવેકાનંદના નાના ભાઈ ભૂપેન્દ્રનાથ દત્ત આગળ જતાં બીજા સાથીઓ સાથે મળીને સામ્યવાદી પક્ષની ભારતમાં સ્થાપના કરી! વિવેકાનંદના ચિંતનમાં તો સમાજ અને ધાર્મિક રીતરિવાજોનો વિરોધ દેખાય છે, સમાજ વ્યવસ્થાનો પણ વિરોધ દેખાય છે, પરંતુ અરવિંદનો તો માર્ગ બદલી ગયો!

One more quick thought – shouldn’t forcing (or brain-washing) a child to renounce reality (to take દીક્ષા) be considered child abuse?

I consider it lot more than a “child abuse”. How can one denounce something without knowing what he/she is giving up? Nobody knows how active his/her hormones are going to be after becoming adult. Swami Sachhidanand has written lot on this subject, correctly so. I have heard many stories about such young boys/girls wanting to leave their “sadhutva” but are pressured not to do so. What happens afterwards is kept secret. Catholic Church is full of such stories coming out in recent times.

pdf ખોલ્યા પહેલાં જ સમજી ગયો હતો કે આ વળી કોઈ જૈન મુનિનું જ તૂત હશે. એમને ખરેખર તો નાસામાં નામ નોંધાવીને અવકાશયાત્રી તરીકે તાલીમ લેવી જોઇએ અને જાતે અવકાશયાનમાં જઈનેખાતરી કરી લેવી જોઇએ. પણ શું થાય? જૈન સાધુઓ વાહનનો તો ઉપયોગ કરી ન શકે. ઊડે તો પણ ગુરુત્વાકર્ષણના નિયમઓ લાગુ પડે એટલે અવકાશમાં જઈ ન શકે!
મહમ્મદ પયગંબર પહેલાં આરબોમાં ‘જાહિલિયા યુગ’ હતો. જાહિલ એટલે મૂર્ખ, જડમતિ. આનો અર્થ એ નહીં કે આરબો બીજી બાબતોમાં પણ જાહિલ હતા. એ બહુ મોટા વેપારી હતા અને આખી દુનિયામાં વણઝાર લઈને જતા અને માલની લે-વેચ કરતા. સમૃદ્ધિ પણ હતી જ. આપણે ત્યાં પણ જાહિલિયા યુગ છે એટલે જૈન મુનિ જે કહે છે તેવી વાતોને સાંભળનારા સમાજમાં છે.
શ્રી નગીનભાઈનો લેખ હંમેશ મુજબ સારો છે. એમણે વૈજ્ઞાનિકોનાં નામ આપ્યાં છે. વ્યક્તિગત વીરલાઓ તો પાક્યા જ છે, પરંતુ વૈજ્ઞાનિક દૃષ્ટિબિંદુને સર્વસ્વીકૃતિ નથી મળી એટલે આપણું માનસિક બંધારણ વિજ્ઞાનને, સામે દેખાતા સત્યને સ્વીકારવા તૈયાર નથી.

સોરી, સરજી, લેખ સારો છે પણ વિજ્ઞાન નીતીઓ નથી શિખવી શક્તો. અને નીતીઓ માટે ધર્મ નહિ પણ આધ્યાત્મિકતાની જરુર રહે છે. વિજ્ઞાનની ભરમાર ને બદલે આપણા દેશને હવે ખરી રીતે તો આપણા અંતરાત્મા અને પરમાત્મામય આધ્યાત્મિકતાની ખુબ જ જરુર છે જે ફક્ત અંતરાત્માની પવિત્રતા હોય તો જ સંભવી શકે.
આવુ હુ એટલા માટે કહુ છુ કેમ કે સંપુર્ણ જગતમાં આપણા દેશમાં સૌથી વધુ વૈજ્ઞાનિક, ડોકટર, એંજીનીયર, સી.એ., એમ.બી.એ. વગેરે વગેરે ઉચ્ચડીગ્રી ધારીઓ ધરાવે છે પરંતુ એમના કાર્યને ફક્ત અને ફક્ત આપણી ભટકાવનારી અધાર્મિકતા ને કારણે વિકસાવી નથી શક્તા.
આપણા દેશમાં વિજ્ઞાન એટલે ડીગ્રી હાથ કરવી અને ધન ના ઢગલા ભેગા કરવા એ જ છે. ભારતીયોના વિકાસ અને સેવાને કોઈ મહત્વ નથી. ખરા દિલથી દેશ સેવા કરનારાઓ આંગળીના વેઢે જ ગણી શકાય એટલા જ છે. જ્યારે લુચ્ચાઓ, ધનભુખ્યાઓ કરોડોની સંખ્યામાં મળી આવે છે એનુ કારણ આપણી અધાર્મિકતાને આ દેશ ધર્મ માને છે એ જ છે. હુ વધુ ઉંડાણમાં નથી લખવા ઈચ્છ્તો પણ આપ સૌને વધુ ઉડાણમાં જવાની વિનંતિ કરુ છુ………….

તમારી સાથે સંપૂર્ણ સંમત છું. વિજ્ઞાન અને ધર્મ બન્ને સાધન છે. વિજ્ઞાન નીતિ ન શીખવી ન શકે એ સાચી વાત છે. સાધનનો ઉપયોગ કેમ કરવો તે આપણા નીતિબોધ પર આધારિત છે. ધર્મ પણ માત્ર ધાર્મિક ક્રિયા શીખવે છે, નીતિ બોધ આપણી અંદર જ હોય છે.
શ્રી દવેસાહેબે એક કૉમેન્ટમાં બહુ સારી વાત કહી છે કે ધર્મકથાઓમાંથી પણ આપણે જે સારૂં હોય તે જ માનીએ છીએ. આમ આપણી અંદર નીતિનો ખ્યાલ બહુ સ્વતંત્ર રીતે અસ્તિત્વમાં હોય છે.
આધ્યાત્મિકતાનો અર્થ સમાજથી કપાઈને અલગ થઈ જવું અને સ્વ-મુક્તિ માટે પ્રયાસ કરતા રહેવું એવો નથી. મારી દૃષ્ટિએ નીતિનો અર્થ પણ સમાજમાં બીજા સાથે આપણે કેમ વર્તીએ છીએ તેમાં પ્રગટ થાય છે. કોઈ નિર્જન ટાપુ પર એકલા જ હોઇએ તો નીતિની પણ જરૂર નથી રહેતી! એટલે ખરી આધ્યાત્મિકતા નીતિમય વ્યવહાર જ છે.
ઘણા વખતે આવ્યા છો. બહુ સારૂં લાગ્યું.

ધન્યવાદ સાહેબ, પણ વિજ્ઞાન સાધનનુ જ્ઞાન આપે છે જ્યારે ધાર્મિકતા એના સારા અને નરસા ઉપયોગની દોરવણી કરે છે, જ્યારે આધ્યાત્મિકતા એટલે કે આત્મા-પરમાત્માનો ડર એના માનવસેવા માટે જ ઉપયોગ કરવાનુ જોર શીખવે છે. નીતી બોધ એ આપણો આત્મા, અંતઃસ્ફુરણા જ શીખવે છે, વિજ્ઞાન નહિ.
ધાર્મિક કથાઓ જે સત્ય હોય એને અપનાવામાં કોઈ વાંધો નથી દા.ત. શીર્ડી સાઈબાબા, મીરાબાઈ, વગેરે પણ જે કાલ્પનિક હોય એ સારી હોય તો પણ અપનાવવાથી નુકસાન થાય છે એવુ ભારતમાં બચપણથી જોયુ જ છે.
આધ્યાત્મિકતાનો અર્થ છે કુટુંબ થી સ્વતંત્ર વિચારીને સમાજને અને દેશ-દુનિયાને કુટુંબ બનાવવો એવુ છે. કેમ કે પોતાના સંતાનો અને સગાઓને તો મનુષ્ય અને પશુ-પક્ષીઓ પ્રેમ કરે પણ જે પારકાઓને પ્રેમ કરી જાણે એ જ તો તેઓ ભગવાન નહિ પણ સંત કહેવાય ને સરજી.
જ્યારે વિજ્ઞાને જે કંઈ પણ ઉત્પન્ન કર્યુ એ પ્રથમ અમુક વરસ સુધી તો જે તે (દેશો)ની મોનોપોલી બનીને બીજાને ગુલામ બનાવ્યા જ છે ને, શોષણ તો કર્યુ જ છે ને સરજી.
એટલે હુ ભાર દઈને કહુ છુ જ્યા સુધે આત્મા-પરમાત્માને જેઓ અવગણે છે તેઓ અનર્થ ઉત્પન્ન કરે છે અને એવુ મોટા ભાગે વિજ્ઞાનીઓ અજાણતા જ કરી બેસે છે ને સરજી.
વરસમાં આમ પણ આપણને ક્યાંક પીકનીક કરવાનુ મન થાય છે એવી રીતે સમાજસેવાથી બે ઘડી પોરો લઈને ૧૫-૨૦-૩૦ દિવસ કોઈ ટાપુ-પહાડ-જંગલ નહિ તો ડિઝનીલેંડ જવામાં કોઈ નુકસાન નથી.

આપનો એક મુદ્દો સાચો છે કે લોકો પૈસા બનાવવા પાછળ વધુ પ્રયત્ન કરે છે, નહિ કે બીજાને મદદ કરવા માટે. પણ એ શ્રી સંઘવી સાહેબ ના મૂળ મુદ્દાથી તદ્દન જુદીજ વાત છે. શું આપ માનો છો કે પૃથ્વી ગોળ છે? આજના જમાનામાં પૃથ્વી ગોળ હોવાની ના પાડનારા અને તે સાબિત કરવા મથનારા કેટલા? અંધશ્રદ્ધાની પણ હદ હોય કે નહિ?

માનનીય શ્રી દવે સાહેબ, પ્રુથ્વી ગોળ તો નથી જ, પા ભાગ તો ચંદ્ર ખાઈ ગયો, વળી ઉબડખાબડ છે અને પરમાત્માએ આપણને બુધ્ધી આપે અને આપણે સપાટ બનાવીને એમા વસી શકીએ છીએ એટલે બાઈબલે કહ્યુ છે કે પ્રુથ્વી સપાટ છે, ચોરસ નથી કહ્યુ સાહેબ.
એથી વધીને હવે આપને એને ઉચી ઉચી બીલ્ડીંગોની હારમાળાઓ પાથરીને લીલોતરી વિહોણી કરીને આપણને ગમે એવી રીતે ફરીથી સપાટમાંથી બેડોળ બનાવવાના કામો આદરી દિધા છે. વિજ્ઞાનની પ્રગતિ છે, દુબઈ માં લગભગ આખુ શહેર જ સમુદ્ર પર વસાવી દેવાની યોજના ઘડાઈ ચુકી છે. આપણા જંગલો નાશ પામી ગયા એટલે પશુ-પક્ષીઓ ને મરવાનો વારો આપણે વિજ્ઞાનીઓએ જ લાવી દિધો જ છે ને સાહેબ.
હવે આશ્રમો, ઋષિઓ, હરણો, મોરલાઓ એ બધુ કાલ્પનિક લાગે છે એનુ કારણ આ વિજ્ઞાન જ છે ને સાહેબ.
વિજ્ઞાનને જ માનવુ એ પણ અંધશ્રધ્ધ બની જાય છે ને સાહેબ. નાસ્તિક જ બની રહેવુ એ પણ અંધશ્રધ્ધા આપોઆપ બની જ જાય છે સરજી ભલે તમે વિજ્ઞાનમાં અંધશ્રધ્ધેય રહો હુ આત્મિક જ્ઞાનમાં અંધશ્રધ્ધેય રહુ. જેને આપણો ન્યાય કરવાનો હક્ક છે એ આપણા સૌનો એને ગમતી રીતે ન્યાય કરશે જ એટલે હુ એ ન્યાયીના ડરથી એને ગમતુ કરીશ અને બધાને એવુ કરવા માટે પ્રેરતો રહીશ, તમને ગમતુ હોય તો વેલકમ.

વિજ્ઞાન એ શ્રદ્ધાનો વિષય નથી એટલે અંધશ્રદ્ધાનો હોવાનો તો સવાલ જ ઉભો નથી થતો. ઘણા ધાર્મિક અગ્રણીઓ અને ખાસ કરીને બાઈબલ વેચનારાઓ સહુને એવું ઠસાવવાનો પ્રયત્ન કરે છે કે વિજ્ઞાન પણ શ્રદ્ધાનો વિષય છે. એ તો હળહળતું જુઠ જ છે. વિજ્ઞાન તો નક્કર પુરાવાઓ લઈને જ ચાલે છે.
બીજું કે આજે પૃથ્વી પરથી લીલોતરી અને પશુઓ ઓછા થતા જાય છે એમાં વિજ્ઞાનનો નહિ, માણસના લોભનો અને વધુ પડતી વસ્તીનો વાંક છે. પણ શું થાય, બધા ધર્મગ્રંથો અને ધાર્મિક અગ્રણીઓ હજુ વસ્તી વધારવાનું કહે છે. પછી એમાં લીલોતરી અને પશુઓ નષ્ટ જ થાય ને?
અને પૃથ્વી ગોળ જ છે એ તો સંપૂર્ણ રીતે સાબિત થઇ ચૂકેલ હકીકત છે. આપ જે ઉબડખાબડની વાત કરો છો એ તો surface પર ને વાત છે. પૃથ્વીનો વ્યાસ ૧૨,૭૫૬ કિલોમીટર છે. પૃથ્વી પરનો સહુથી ઉંચો પર્વત ૭ કિમી છે અને સમુદ્ર નો સહુથી ઊંડો ભાગ ૨.૫ કિમી ઊંડો છે. બધીયે ઉબડખાબડ૧૦ કીમીથીયે ઓછી છે. ૦.૦૭% ઉબડખાબડ છે – દૂરથી જોતા વર્તાય પણ નહિ. બાકી તો અવકાશમાં ભ્રમણ કરતો એક ગોળો જ છે. એટલે એ સપાટ હોવાનો દાવો માત્ર હાસ્યાસ્પદ ગણવો જોઈએ. પણ આપણે દુખ સાથે જોઈએ છીએ કે કોઈ ધાર્મિક સંસ્થા એ દાવો પણ કરે છે.

આજ્ઞાપાલનની ટ્રાઇબલ ટેવ આના માટે જવાબદાર છે. જેમ પ્રાચીન સમયમાં ટ્રાઇબ (ગણ)નો નેતા કહે તે સર્વમાન્ય બનતું તે આજે પણ ચાલે છે. એટલે ચીલો છોડીને ચાલવાની કદી ટેવ જ નથી પડી. સહુગત તે વહુગત. એ આપણી ફિલોસોફી છે.
करिष्ये वचनं तव.(જેમ તું કહીશ તેમ હું કરીશ), એ આપણી સંસ્કૃતિ છે. આ સમસ્યા અપવાદો બાદ કરતાં આખા એશિયાની છે. એટલે જ બધા ધર્મોનો ઉદય એશિયામામ્થયો, પશ્ચિમમાં ચીલો છોડવાની છૂટ હોવાથી વિજ્ઞાનનો વિકાસ થઈ શક્યો. Stupid રહેવું એ આપણી નિયતિ નહીં choiceછે, શું થાય?

Yes. Unthinking obedience to big personalities and one-track minds are some of the the causes of our intellectual handicap, as you rightly point out.
But what is it that caused our people to become like this, more than in advanced modern nations? Our genes? Certainly not. Do you think it can be culture or upbringing? or Religion?
The causes are multiple and sociologists need to analyze them in depth.
But let us stop denying the problem indirectly or minimizing it by saying : Others are also bad. Why compare or compete with backward peoples? We need to modernize our minds in our own interest.

करिष्ये वचनं तव. તેવી જો આપણી સંસ્કૃતિ હોત તો આખી ભગવદ ગીતા કહેવાની જરુર ન પડી હોત. કેટલાયે પ્રશ્નો પુછ્યાં અને જ્યારે અર્જુનના મનનું સંપૂર્ણ સમાધાન થયું ત્યારે તેણે કહ્યું કે : करिष्ये वचनं तव.
વિજ્ઞાનના પ્રકાશમાં સંસ્કૃતિને વગોવવાની જરુર નથી. વિજ્ઞાન, વિજ્ઞાનના સ્થાને બરાબર છે અને સંસ્કૃતિ, સંસ્કૃતિના સ્થાને યોગ્ય છે. જ્યારે એકબીજાને સેળભેળ કરવામાં આવે ત્યારે ગરબડ ઉભી થાય છે.
સ્વામી વિવેકાનંદનો આ વિચાર ચિંતવવા જેવો છે :
આત્માની અનંત શક્તિનો પ્રભાવ :-
જડ પદાર્થ પર પાડવામાં આવે, ત્યારે ભૌતિક વિકાસ થાય છે.
વિચાર પર તેનો પ્રભાવ પાડવામાં આવે , ત્યારે બૌદ્ધિક વિકાસ થાય છે.
તેના પોતાના પર જ્યારે તે પાડવામાં આવે ત્યારે માણસમાંથી ઈશ્વર બને છે.
વિજ્ઞાન એટલે જડ પદાર્થ પર આત્માની અનંત શક્તિનો પ્રભાવ. કોઈ પણ પ્રશ્નનું સમાધાન મેળવવા માટે આત્માની શક્તિનો પ્રભાવ વિચાર પર પાડવાની આવશ્યકતા હોય છે અને તેને માટેની પદ્ધતિઓ ધારણા અને ધ્યાનમાંથી સારી રીતે મળે છે.
જૈન મુનિની વાત માની શકાય તેવી નથી પણ તેને લીધે આખે આખી સંસ્કૃતિને ભાંડવાની રીત વ્યાજબી લાગતી નથી.

Dear Subodhbhai and Dipakbhai:
Homo sapiens evolved in small cave-dwelling groups. In those, one took the group opinions as firm fact, and never dared question it, for the fear of being castigated. This applies to all humans. In addition, we Indians seem to have taken વ્યક્તિ-પૂજા to a new art form. So yes, as you point out, Dipakbhai, we choose to remain stupid due to social pressures.
Having said that, (and i weep for India), it is not just us. Middle eastern countries are far backward than ours. Even in the US, some 60-70% deny science. I sincerely hope that we are not witnessing the dawn of another dark ages!

તમે મધ્યપૂર્વની વાત કરો છો તે જ મેં કહ્યું છે કે ટ્રાઇબલ ટેવોથી આખું એશિયા પિડાય છે.
સ્ટૂપિડિટી જેનેટિક નથી. માત્ર હજારો વર્ષોથી એ આચરતા આવ્યા છીએ એટલે એ જેનેટિક હોવાનો આભાસ ઊભો થાય છે.
પશ્ચિમમાં પણ આવા લોકો અને પંથો મળશે, પણ એ બધા મુખ્ય ધારાની સીમારેખા પર રહે છે. ત્યાં પણ મધર મૅરીની તસવીરમાંથી આંસુ ટપકતાં હોય છે. પણ માનનારા કરતાં ન માનનારાની સંખ્યા વધારે મોટી હોય છે.
આસ્થા એવી વસ્તુ છે કે કોઈ પણ માણસ માની ન શકે કે ગણેશની મૂર્તિ દૂધ પીએ છે. મેં પણ ન જ માન્યું. પરંતુ મારા એક મુસ્લિમ મિત્ર અને એમની બહેને પોતાના ઘરમાં જ આ વાતની મઝાક કરી તો એમની અમ્મીનું કહેવું હતુંઃ અલ્લાહ કા ખૌફ ખાઓ. વહ ક્યા ક્યા કર સકતા હૈ, તુમ જાનતે હો> મઝાક મત કરો, તૌબાહ” અને એમણે આ મઝાક માટે અલ્લાહની માફી માગી લીધી!

સદનસીબે હું એ વખતે તદ્દન અજાણ હતો, પણ ઘણા મિત્રોએ ગણેશને દૂધ પાયું હતું. પછી મેં નવાઈ વ્યક્ત કરી ત્યારે ભણેલા ઇજનેર મિત્રોએ પણ સ્મિત સાથે કહ્યું કે “એક chance તો લેવો જોઈએ ને!”
અમેરિકામાં પણ આજ-કાલ મૂર્ખાઓની સંખ્યા વધી રહી છે! ધાર્મિક extrimism એ પુરા વિશ્વમાં મઝા મૂકી છે!
પણ હું માનતો હતોકે સપાટ પૃથ્વીવાળા તો હવે કોઈ જ નહિ હોય! આ તો અકલ્પનીય છે!

Hahaha. This is interesting.
Well, I was born to Jain parents. That makes me Jain.
Some 10-12 years ago, I did go to Palitana with an extended family. My objective was more of mountaineering than religious. There I made a point to visit this place called “Jambu Dwip”, where they showed 30 minute film on this very subject presented in this article. I sat patiently for 30 minutes bearing this intellectual insult. I have referred to this subject more than once in my earlier articles. Now the same thing is discussed in this book to reach a wide audience.
Before this article appeared in Gujarat Samachar along with other newspapers, there was another article in G.S. dated 29 Nov. 2010. The author claimed that our Agatsya Rishi knew about Gravity centuries before Newton discovered and described it. Not only that, He even knew how to control it! (Increase or decrease it at will). Several examples of this were given from the old books. The sad and serious part was that this article was not in “Dharmalok” section like the other one, but was in the Science & Knowledge section of the paper. (To me this was more objectionable.) I wrote an article rebutting everything claimed in there. For some reason G.S. did not publish it (may be they did not get my mail)! It was published in one of the rationalist magazine “Vaishvik Manavwad” Dec. 2010 issue. I will try to find the original article as well as my rebuttal for Abhivyakti.
Incidentally this was not from a Jain but from a Hindu.
These are only some of the absurd things said in our scriptures. There are so many more mind blowing stories everywhere. To be fair to Jainism and Hinduism, they are not the only ones talking absurdity. All other religions must be competing with one another for the top post. I don’t know much about others to cite examples.
What sets Jainism apart from others is its preaching of Non-violence and non-hoarding of material objects (Aparigrah). That deserves to be mentioned here in all fairness.
This brings me to think of somewhat different subject. Why an intellect like Ambedkar, upon publicly denouncing Hinduism, would accept Buddhism? Why not just denounce The Religion altogether? Was his objection to untouchability and resulting consequences only? Or, may be Political reasons?

This is exactly what you call it : “An intellectual insult.” Most of us have to bear this —-a torture— sometime or the other, especially more so, and much more often, in India.
I stopped subscribing to Gujarat Samachar when I could no longer bear the torture of reading some of the news stories and articles eulogizing blind faith and superstition. Perhaps it mirrors our society and a commercial paper has first to survive. I don’t know if there is any influential voice of Reason among our friends on this blog who can draw the attention of our journalists to this sad state of affairs.
A politician in India cannot survive if he rejects or criticizes religion. Nehru had to be very diplomatic and Gandhiji provided a cover for his unconventional views. Ambedkar did.what he did to survive in Indian politics.
All religions are backward looking and based on mythology but Hinduism is extra-ordinarily so, very much more so than any other. Don’t you think quantity can make a difference in quality too? And also in its consequences? —-Subodh Shah.

એક પગને હાથી કહે અને બીજો પુંછડા ને એમાં ડાહ્યો કોણ? કહેવાતા ધાર્મિક અને કહેવાતા રેશનાલીસ્ટોમા ઝાઝો ભેદ નથી. બેઉ સરખી માત્રામાં જડ છે અને બંનેને પોતાની જડતાઓ દેખાતી નથી. એકનો માપદંડ ધર્મ છે તો બીજાનો વિજ્ઞાન. ધર્મના માપદંડ વાળા નો આગ્રહ છે કે અમે તો દરેક વસ્તુને અમારા ધર્મ ગ્રંથો સાથે મેળ ખાય તો જ સ્વીકારીશું તેમજ વિજ્ઞાનનાં માપદંડવાળા કહે છે કે અમે તો દરેક વસ્તુને તો જ સ્વીકારીએ જો તે વિજ્ઞાનનાં ગ્રંથો સાથે મેળ ખાયતો. નાનું બાળક પણ સમજી શકે છે કે લંબાઈ પહોળાઈ માપવી હોય તો ફૂટપટ્ટી જોઈએ અને ઉષ્ણતા માપવી હોય તો ઉષ્ણતા માપક યંત્ર જોઈએ. પણ બંને જીદ લઇ બેઠા છે કે અમે તો અમારા માપદંડનો ઉપયોગ કરીશું કારણકે એજ સાચું છે. બંને પક્ષે દલીલો પર દલીલો ચાલુ છે કોઈ સમજવા તૈયાર નથી. પાંચ વર્ષથી ગોવિદભાઈનો આ બ્લોગ ચાલે છે અને એકની એક જ વાત જુદા જુદા સ્વરૂપે જુદા જુદા મુદ્દાઓ ઉઠાવી રજુ કરવામાં આવે છે અને પાંચ વર્ષથી એનું એજ બિન વાગ્યા કરે છે. કોઈ કોઈને બદલી શક્યું નથી. કોઈ પોતાનો માપદંડ શું છે અને તે ક્યાં વાપરી શકાય તે જાણવા કે સમજવા તૈયાર નથી. હજી બીજા પચાસ કે સો વરસે પણ આ યુદ્ધ બંધ થાય તેમ નથી.

રેશનાલીસ્ટો અને વૈજ્ઞાનિકો જડ નથી હોતા. અમુક વ્યક્તિઓ હોય, પણ વિજ્ઞાન અને રેશનાલીઝમના ક્ષેત્રો સદા બદલાતા હોય છે. જડતા તો ધર્મનો પાયો છે, વિજ્ઞાન કે રેશનાલીઝમનનો નહિ! આપની વાત અમુક અંશે કદાચ સાચી હોય – અમુક વૈજ્ઞાનિકો પોતાની વાતને કદાચ વળગી રહેતા હોય એવું બને. પરંતુ વિજ્ઞાન પોતાની ભૂલોમાંથી શીખે છે. જરાયે ધાર્મિક અગ્રણીઓ તો એ જ હજારો વર્ષ પુરાની વાર્તાઓ પકડીને બેસી રહે છે. આપના જ ઉદાહરણ ની વાત કરીએ તો આમાં તો એવું બન્યું છે કે વૈજ્ઞાનિકો હાથીને હાથી કહે છે અને ધાર્મિક અગ્રણીઓ એને ગુલાબ કહે છે! કૈંક તૃતીયમ જ! પૃથ્વી ગોળ છે એના તો લાખો નહિ, કરોડો પુરાવા છે. પણ અજ્ઞાનીઓ તેને સપાટ તારીખેજ સાબિત કરવા માંગે છે! શું આપનું માનવું છે કે બેઉ એક સરખી વાત છે? આ બાબતમાં શું વૈજ્ઞાનિકો અને ધાર્મિક અગ્રણીઓ એક જ લેવલ પર છે? કે પછી એકની વાત સાચી ને બીજા અજ્ઞાની છે?
મને આપના બીજા ઉદાહરણ ગમ્યા. આપે કહ્યું છે કે “લંબાઈ પહોળાઈ માપવી હોય તો ફૂટપટ્ટી જોઈએ અને ઉષ્ણતા માપવી હોય તો ઉષ્ણતા માપક યંત્ર જોઈએ” હું સંમત છું. પણ એ બેઉ વસ્તુઓ વૈજ્ઞાનિકોએ જ બનાવી છે, ધાર્મિક અગ્રણીઓ એ નહિ! માટે બંને કદાચ પોતપોતાના ગ્રંથોનો ને પોતપોતાના માપદંડો નો ઉપયોગ કરતા હશે, પણ એકના ગ્રંથમાં પૃથ્વી ગોળ છે ને બીજાના માં સપાટ. એકનો માપદંડ હાથી ને હાથી બતાવે છે ને બીજાનો હાથી ને ગુલાબ. તો એમાં સાચું કોણ?
Just because they both have books and they both claim to be true, does not necessarily put both on equal footing. There has to be an objective assessment of what is proven fact and what is ancient tribal story!

Dear Shri Sharad Shah,
Please consider the difference between religion and science.
1. Believers in Religion go by WHO said it. They will never accept that a prophet could have been mistaken. They believe that he just cannot be wrong, even if new evidence, logic or even common sense may disprove it. (Religion is based on personalities). That is called Faith or Shraddha.
2. Believers in Science go by WHAT is being said, irrespective of Who said it. Newton was very great but Einstein proved him wrong. Scientists saw the error and revised their theory. Science is thus based on Principle, fact, or truth. This is Reason or Rationality.
So the measuring rod in both cases is entirely different. Faith and Reason are exactly opposite. You pick what you want— either Mysticism (Faith) or Reason (Science). Both are not the same, as you say. There are hundreds of examples in the history of the world— Darwinism, Earth’s rotation, and many many more from many more fields.

Please consider the difference between religion and science.
They are two side of the same coin.
Remember when I am saying about religion and science, I am not saying the same what you define. First of all you define all sorts of diseases as religion. You can not see that what you call religions (Jainism, Hinduism, Sikhism, Rationalism, Communism, Christianity, Islam or any other ism) are not really religions but diseases of mankind. All these diseases have done so much harm to the humanity. Millions of people are killed, due to these diseases. But keep on defining such diseases as Religion and also keep on splitting, with out knowing what religion is. Isn’t it? I wish you become little rational and see the things in its reality.
You are using the words, “Believers in Religion” and “Believers in Science”
Can’t you see that believing is nothing but “BLINDNESS”. What you believe is not important, but the very act of believing is blindness. The very basic of science is Inquiry and Exploration, not believing. And any research in science is not an end. Science never claims that this invention is “THE TRUTH” “THE END”. Science only says that, with the means available, to day we could find only this much. It is an on going process. And that is the beauty of Science. But the believers in science will always have conflict with other believers. Because both are sailing in the same boat. Both are equally blind and not ready to understand the other dimension. My dear believing is easy, but knowing is difficult and that’s the reason we always choose believing. We can not see our own laziness. To be Jaina is easy, but to be Mahavira is very difficult. It requires a painful process of several years or lives. And we choose to be Jaina. As Murjibhai said,” I was born to Jain parents. That makes me Jain.” Is n’t it easy?
I am not against science or religion, as both have done great service to my life. They are at your service too. I wish you open the eyes and enjoy each moment of human life. It is very precious.

પાક્કા સો વરસ. જેના આધારે માણસો કુદા કુદ છે એ પેટ્રોલના ભંડાર પૂરા થવા દો . એક જાટકે બદલાઈ જેશે.

એક પગને હાથી કહે અને બીજો પુંછડા ને એમાં ડાહ્યો કોણ? કહેવાતા ધાર્મિક અને કહેવાતા રેશનાલીસ્ટોમા ઝાઝો ભેદ નથી. બેઉ સરખી માત્રામાં જડ છે અને બંનેને પોતાની જડતાઓ દેખાતી નથી. એકનો માપદંડ ધર્મ છે તો બીજાનો વિજ્ઞાન. ધર્મના માપદંડ વાળા નો આગ્રહ છે કે અમે તો દરેક વસ્તુને અમારા ધર્મ ગ્રંથો સાથે મેળ ખાય તો જ સ્વીકારીશું તેમજ વિજ્ઞાનનાં માપદંડવાળા કહે છે કે અમે તો દરેક વસ્તુને તો જ સ્વીકારીએ જો તે વિજ્ઞાનનાં ગ્રંથો સાથે મેળ ખાયતો. નાનું બાળક પણ સમજી શકે છે કે લંબાઈ પહોળાઈ માપવી હોય તો ફૂટપટ્ટી જોઈએ અને ઉષ્ણતા માપવી હોય તો ઉષ્ણતા માપક યંત્ર જોઈએ. પણ બંને જીદ લઇ બેઠા છે કે અમે તો અમારા માપદંડનો ઉપયોગ કરીશું કારણકે એજ સાચું છે. બંને પક્ષે દલીલો પર દલીલો ચાલુ છે કોઈ સમજવા તૈયાર નથી. પાંચ વર્ષથી ગોવિદભાઈનો આ બ્લોગ ચાલે છે અને એકની એક જ વાત જુદા જુદા સ્વરૂપે જુદા જુદા મુદ્દાઓ ઉઠાવી રજુ કરવામાં આવે છે અને પાંચ વર્ષથી એનું એજ બિન વાગ્યા કરે છે. કોઈ કોઈને બદલી શક્યું નથી. કોઈ પોતાનો માપદંડ શું છે અને તે ક્યાં વાપરી શકાય તે જાણવા કે સમજવા તૈયાર નથી. હજી બીજા પચાસ કે સો વરસે પણ આ યુદ્ધ બંધ થાય તેમ નથી.

પાક્કા સો વરસ. જેના આધારે માણસો કુદા કુદ છે એ પેટ્રોલના ભંડાર પૂરા થવા દો . એક જાટકે બદલાઈ જેશે.
પેટની આજુ બાજુ રચાયેલી માયા જાળ છે. પેટ તો ભરવું પડશે કોઇ રીતે. કાંઇક નવું થશે.

આસ્થા અને શ્રધા વધારે રહે છે. માણસ ને જયારે જીવન મરણ નો સવાલ આવે છે ત્યારે તે વિજ્ઞાનને નહિ ધર્મ નેજ યાદ કરે છે.
કહે છે કે ગાંધીજી ના છેલ્લા ઉદગારો હે રામ હતા કેમ કે માણસનો અંત આવે કે કટોકટી આવે ત્યારે ધર્મ જ શાશ્વત શાંતિ
આપે છે. લેખક પોતે અંત માં કહે છે કે ગ્રીકો ના દેવ zeus ના મુખ્ય મંદિર ની ટેકરી ઓલ્યમ્પિક ની શરૂઆત થઇ હતી .
એટલે છેલા શરીર ના ખૂણે ધર્મ ની આસ્થા તો દર્શાવે છે .

Science has always worked hard to find a emicable solution to the problem it has come across. Hard working people. Will not put the problem unsolved….They follow Swami Vivekanand…..UTHO JAGO AND STOP NOT TILL THE PROBLEM IS SOLVED……
Dharma and dharmik sadhuo…..on the contarary….are busy in adding to the number of problems…society is facing to earn their bread and butter. AT THIS stage let us think about our own HINDU dharma…why worry about others. SAB SABKI SAMHALO….ME MERI FODATA HUN….

Problem is not some where outside, it is very much in the mind and no body wants to change his/her mindset, as it is programmed in that fashion. And people at large are in deep sleep. I wish you, be little aware, be little awake and you will see everything in it’s right perspective.
Just abusing the so called religion will not solve the problem. Recognize these so called religions as diseases and have that daring to accept it. We have long history of mankind and we are well aware that these so called religions have killed many people and done harm to the humanity, but not ready to accept.
You are saying,” Science has always worked hard to find amicable solution to the problem it has come across.” But science can not change the mind set of the people, can not de-program the mind. There only religion can help, as it is the purview of religion. One must have common sense that needle can stich, not a scissor. Science has different dimension.
If I have a fracture in my leg, no religion will help, as it is not a purview of religion. I need to go to the science to have medical treatment for my leg. No much rationality is required to know such simple fact. But so called rationalist do want to listen to religion and so called religious do not want to listen to science. That’s the reason, I said, both are sailing in the same boat and equally stubborn and stupid.

I see rationalists and rationalism being bashed on this blog now and then. I believe it is time to properly redefine what we really believe in and what our goal is. The appropriate word, in my opinion, should be “Rational Humanism” Humanism is meant as “Manavwad” which is somewhat different than “Manavta”. Manavta means helping the needy. Manavwad is all that plus revering the human dignity. It also means that all the great people of past and present were/are humans and not Gods, notwithstanding their super achievements.
Is short, a true rationalist would be a rational humanist.
In defense of a religion, I often read that the true religion is not all these so called traditional religions but something beyond it. I never saw a convincing definition of this something else. Well, to me a religion is what most people believe it is. To every religious person his religious belief is the true religion.
Fine tuning of the above definition is invited and will be appreciated.

ધર્મ કોઈ મંદિરોમા ઘંટડીઓ ખખડાવવાની, કે મસ્જીદમા પાંચ ટાઈમ નમાજ પડવાની કે પોપટની માફક નમઃ અરિહંતાણમ મંત્ર બોલવાના ક્રિયા કલાપો નથી. કે નથી હજારો લોકો ની ખોખલી માન્યતાઓનુ નામ.
ધર્મ છે જીવન પ્રેમપૂર્ણ, આનંદપૂર્ણ અને હોશપૂર્વક જીવવાની કળા. ધર્મ છે બધા જ ચશ્માઓ ઉતારી જોવાની કળા. ધર્મ છે સત્યની અનુભુતિની કળા. ધર્મ છે સાચા સ્વરુપનુ જ્ઞાન અને માર્ગ. ધર્મનો પાયો છે પ્રેમ અને કરુણા, ભય અને લાલચ નહી. ધર્મ એક જ હોઈ શકે હજારો નહી. ઍટલે જ હું જ્યારે ધર્મ શબ્દનો ઊપયોગ કરું છું ત્યારે મારી વ્યાખ્યા પ્રમાણે અને બીજા લેબલવાળા ધર્મોને કહેવાતા ધર્મો કહું છું.
પરંતુ વ્યાખ્યાઓ ગમે તેટલી સુંદર હોય જીવન પરિવર્તિત નથી કરતી . પાણીની વ્યાખ્યા પ્યાસ નથી બુઝાવતી.ખરેખર પ્યાસ હોય તો કેવળ પાણી જ પ્યાસ બુઝાવી શકે. પણ પ્યાસ જ નથી અને કેવળ દિમાગી ખુજલી જ છે તો સ્વયં પરમાત્મા પણ સહાયક નથી બનતો. ધર્મના ફુલો ત્યારે જ ખીલે છે જ્યારે ધર્મ જીવો તો. જેમ મહાવીરના જીવનમાં ખિલ્યા કે મહંમદના કે જીસસના જીવનમાં ખિલ્યા. એ સંભાવના મારા, તમારા અને બધાની અંદર છે, જરુર છે બસ અટકી ગયેલી પીનનો અવરોધ દુર કરવાની. બધા અવરોધો દુર થશે તો જીવનમાં મધુર સંગિત અવશ્ય ગુંજશે.

Well, to me a religion is what most people believe it is. To every religious person his religious belief is the true religion.
તમે જે ને ધર્મ કહો છો તેને જ હું રોગ કહું છું. લાખો લોકો માને એટલે ધર્મ નથી બનતો પણ જો તેને ધર્મ માની લેવામાં આવે તો બીજા અનેક લોકો માટે તે આમંત્રણ બની જાય છે અને બુધ્ધીમાન લોકો માટે હાંસીનુ કે મજાકનુ કે કટાક્ષનુ પાત્ર. પણ જ્યારે તેને રોગ તરીકે જોશો તો ભિતર કરુણાનો ભાવ જાગશે. ઘરમાં કોઈ માંદુ પડેતો શું આપણે તેની હાંસી ઊડાવીએ છી કે તેની સેવા ચાકરી કરી તેને રોગ મુક્ત કરવા પ્રયત્ન કરીએ છીએ? રોગને કોઈ શણગારવાની જરુર નથી. શણગારેલી સ્ત્રી કોઈનુ ધ્યાન ખેંચી શકે કારણકે એ આમંત્રણ છે પણ કોઈની સહાનુભુતિ કે મદદ ન મેળવી શકે. આ રોગીઓને મદદની જરુર છે કરુણાપૂર્વક ટ્રીટમેન્ટની જરુર છે નહી કે તે ધર્મથી વ્યાખ્યાયિત કરીને હજારો બીજા લોકો માટે આકર્ષણ ઉભું કરવાની કે તેમની મજાક કરવાની કે મુર્ખાઓ કહી વગોવવાની.

અહીં ઘણા બધા લેખકો જેમકે રમણભાઈ, હરનીશભાઈ, મુરજીભાઈ, ગોવિંદભાઈ,દિનેશભાઈ, ધવલભાઈ અને બીજા પણ અતિ વિદ્વાન છે અને ઉંડા વિચારક છે. તેમને જુદા જુદા વિષયો પર ઉંડો અભ્યાસ કરેલ છે અને તેમના કુશળ તર્કભર્યા વિચારોએ ઘણા બધા લોકોને પ્રભાવિત કર્યા છે કે વિચાર કરતા કર્યા છે. તેઓની બુધ્ધિમતાનો હું પ્રશંસક છું. સાચું કહું તો તેમની બુધ્ધિમતાની ઘણીવાર ઈર્ષા પણ થાય. રેશનાલિઝમનો હું હિમાયતિ છું અને હૃદયપૂર્વક ઈચ્છું પણ છું કે બધા ખોટી માન્યતાઓ અને ભ્રમણાઓમાંથી મુક્ત થાય અને જે છે જેમ છે તેમ જોઈ શકે. હિન્દુ હિન્દુના ચશ્માથી જુએ છે અને મુસલમાન મુસલમાનના અને એ જ રીતે અન્ય લોકો અન્ય પ્રકારના ચશ્માથી અને જે છે તે જોઈ શકતા નથી. બસ આજ રીતે કહેવાતા રેશનાલીસ્ટો પણ પોતાના રેશનાલીસ્ટના ચશમા ઉતારવા તૈયાર નથી થતા ત્યારે દુખ થાય. દુખ થાય એ વાતનુ કે પેલા કહેવાતા ધાર્મિકો તો બાળક જેવા છે જેમને હૃદયતો છે પણ મગજ નથી અને ભુલ કરે તો કદાચ માફ પણ કરી શકાય. પણ જ્યારે જે લોકો રેશનાલીસ્ટ હોવાનો દાવો કરી રહ્યા છે જેમની પાસે ઉંચી વિચાર શક્તિ છે તે જ્યારે ભિંત ભુલે અને સમજ્યા કર્યા વગર કેવળ થૂંક ઊડાડવાની રમતમાં લાગી જાય ત્યારે માનવ માટે ભયાનક હાનીની સંભાવના એકદમ વધી જાય છે. એક બાળક નુકશાન કરીને બહુ બહુ તો બે ચાર રમકડા કે કોઈ ઈલેક્ટ્રોનિક ગેઝેટ તોડીનાંખે પણ એક પુખ્ત અને બુધ્ધીશાળી માણસ તો આખા જગતને નષ્ટ કરી શકે, જે ખતરનાક છે. મારો વાંધો એક જ છે કે રેશનાલીસ્ટોએ કહેવાતા ધર્મનો સફાયો કરતી વખતે એટલુ ધ્યાન તો અવશ્ય રાખવું પડશે કે જે અસલ ધર્મ છે તે બચે. કચરો તો બળી જાય પણ સોનુ તેના શુધ્ધ સ્વરુપે પાછું મળે અને તો જ તે રેશનાલીઝમ છે. મારી સમજ મુજબ તો રેશનાલીસ્ટ અને ધાર્મિકમાં કોઈ ભેદ નથી. અને હોઈ પણ કેવી રીતે? જ્યાં સુધી બધા ચશ્મા ન ઉતરે ત્યાંસુધી કોઈ રેશનાલીસ્ટ કેવી રીતે બની શકે? કે ધાર્મિક કેવી રીતે બની શકે? હા, હિન્દુ બની શકે મુસલમાન બની શકે ધાર્મિક ક્યારે નહી.

Whether one knows or not, but every human has one and only goal to merge with the original source.(If you desire, may call it GOD or Superhuman or Existence or Nature or Prakruti or anything you like that does not make difference. One calls it water and another calls it PANI but the taste and quality is the same. Words are not important as meaning we put in). And till one meets the original source, can not be at peace. One has to take one after another birth. Only human has a choice either to evolve or to involve. That is the difference between animal and human and that is why human is above all creature in the world.
Murjibhai, just look within, and you will find all sorts of chaos and hustle and bustle, though you have enough money, comforts, reputation, knowledge and what not? Then why so much dissatisfaction? Why pain? Why worries? Why anxiety? Why anger?. If you analyze the situation with in you with honesty you will know my saying has some truth. This I am not telling you from Jain or Hindu or Isai scripture but from my own analysis and observation of self. I wish every body here fill with real happiness and peace.

Dear Sharadbhai:
You say that “every human has one and only goal to merge with the original source”. I agree. The only difference is that, science has clearly shown that the “original source” is nothing but dirt. When we die, we merge with the earth and its environment (by being digested by worms, or turning into ashes). That is it.
Once you understand that, the “real happiness and peace” comes from being an enlightened rational humanist. Everything else is simply word games.

શરદ શાહ ની વાત એકદમ સાચી છે. રેશનાલીસ્તો એકદમ કટ્ટર માફક ઘણી વાર વર્તે છે જેનાથી નુકસાન જ થાય.
આટલી કટ્ટરતા ધર્મ માં પણ છે તો પછી ધર્મ શું ખોટો ? વ્યવહારુ જ્ઞાન પીરસવામાં માનવ જીવનનો મહત્વનો ધર્મ છે જેને
તમે ઉખાડી ને ફેકી ના શકો.પણ તેમાં જ રહી સુધારા અને જાગૃતિ અવશ્ય ફેલાવી શકો. તે લોકો તો ધર્મ અને શાસ્ત્રો
ને દરિયા માં ફેકી દેવા જોઈએ તેટલી હદ સુધી કેમ જાય છે ? ધર્મ માનવ જીવનમાં છેજ જેને તમે એકદમ નકારી શકો નહિ.
અરે રેશનાલીસ્તો પણ ક્યાંક ને ક્યાંક ધાર્મિક તો હોવાના જ. અસર તો રહેવાનીજ. સમજણ કટ્ટરતા માં ફેરવાય ત્યારે તમારો

થઇ ગયો છે. સંત કે સાધુ કે આચાર્ય ગાડી, મોબાઈલ, વિમાન, ફેક્ષ, કોમ્પુટર, લેપટોપ, એ.સી. અને બીજું ઘણું બધું
વિજ્ઞાનની શોધો નો સ્વીકાર તો કરે છે. અને ઉપયોગ પણ કરે છે. ધર્મ નહિ પણ તેના અનુયાયીઓ વધારે કટ્ટર અને
અંધ્શ્રધાળું હોય છે. વિજ્ઞાન ઘણીવાર ધર્મ માં રહેલા તર્ક નો ઉપયોગ કરી પ્રમાણિત રાહે આગળ વધે છે. ધર્મ માજ
બધી ખામીયો છે તેમ માનવાને કોઈ કારણ નથી. જેમ સુધારા વિજ્ઞાન માં પણ થતા રહે છે તેમ ધર્મ માં પણ થતા રહેવા જોઈએ .

Your definition of “dharma” seems to be different than that of Sharad Shah’s. He says all established religions are primarily wrong. He kind of points towards humanism and “Adhyatma”. I am with him about humanism but find Adhyatma and escapism too close to each other and hence hard to separate.
In short, Everyone has his own definition of Dharma, which causes another set of problems.
What you have discribed above is “reformist’s” job. There is a difference between a reformist and a rationalist. With all their good intentions, most reformists end up creating new sect of an established religion, which in turn creats one more set of new problems.

I still fail to understand where/how rationalists are or I am કટ્ટર . The religions have buchered millions of people over centuries by being કટ્ટર, When rationalists point that out, they are considered કટ્ટર just for telling the truth as it is. It is sad how the definition of કટ્ટર changes when evaluating religions versus rationalists.
You say that religions are accepting scientific advances. Well, they have no choice. If they practice what they preach, they would be living in the 12th centuary and would not be able to function! Just because that have to adopt what science has to offer, does not mean that science has to accept what religion offers.
As i mentioned in an earlier comment as well, all progress of humans has been either due to improved civic sence or due to science, and in both cases, by going against prevailing religion’s dogma. There isn’t a single instance in which religion has been correct compared to modern civic sense or science. If proclaiming this simple fact makes me કટ્ટર in your opinion then so be it. I’m just saying the facts as they are.
On a side note, i’m not sure if you had the opportunity to read my last comment on the previous post where we were discussing modern civic sense / modern morality vis-a-vis religious stories. I was looking forward to your thoughts on the last point.

પણ તમે કહો છો કે “ધર્મ તો હવે વિજ્ઞાન ને પણ સ્વીકારતો થઇ ગયો છે. સંત કે સાધુ કે આચાર્ય ગાડી, મોબાઈલ, વિમાન, ફેક્ષ, કોમ્પુટર, લેપટોપ, એ.સી. અને બીજું ઘણું બધું વિજ્ઞાનની શોધો નો સ્વીકાર તો કરે છે. અને ઉપયોગ પણ કરે છે.”
આને તમે ધર્મમાં સુધારો માનો છો? આ તો ટેકનોલૉજી છે. એ વિજ્ઞાનની પેદાશ જરૂર છે, કોઈ ધર્મગુરુએ એમ કહ્યું છે કે ગ્રહણ છૂટે ત્યારે નહાવાની જરૂર નથી? કોઈએ એમ નથી કહ્યું કે શ્રાદ્ધ કરવાની જરૂર નથી. કોઇએ એમ નથી કહ્યું કે સ્વર્ગ અને નર્ક નથી હોતાં. પછી ભલે ને તેઓ લૅપટૉપ વાપરતા હોય!
પણ વિજ્ઞાનની વાત થાય છે, ત્યારે વૈજ્ઞાનિક અભિગમની વાત થાય છે.
શ્રી શરદભાઈ શાહ ધર્મ વિશે જે કહે છે તે વાંચવા જેવું છે. માત્ર ટેકનોલૉજીને નહીં આજે આપણે જેને હિન્દુ ધર્મ, ઇસ્લામ, જૈન ધર્મ, ખ્રિસ્તી ધર્મ વગેરે કહીએ છીએ તે બધાને તેઓ બીમારી માને છે. આ બીમારીનો ઇલાજ શો કરવો?

Dear Mr. Sharad Shah,
85-90% people in the world believe in one of the traditional religion. You call them diseased. Atheists, rationalists and the likes make up remaining 10-15%. You call them stupid. If I remember correctly, you once said to me that you are disciple of Rajnish. What you are telling us here that only his few thousand or few lakh disciples know the true meaning of life. All others are either diseased or stupid as you have said.
You also said,”Problem is not some where outside, it is very much in the mind and no body want to change his/her mindset, as it is programmed in that fashion.”
My question to you Mr. Shah is, “doesn’t this apply to you as well”?
You also said, “એક પુખ્ત અને બુધ્ધીશાળી માણસ તો આખા જગતને નષ્ટ કરી શકે, જે ખતરનાક છે”.
I came accross several people who said something similar about Rajnish when he was in the USA. (I was there at the time.) Would you get upset if I asked you for your honest opinion of those people saying such a thing about Rajnish?
I for myself have no clear positive or negative opinion on Rajnish. I listened to him in my college days. Then I was impressed by his style and presentation but NOT with the substance.
You also said about me, “Then why so much dissatisfaction? Why pain? Why worries? Why anxiety? Why anger?.
What makes you think I am dissatisfied with my life, am in pain, worried, anxious and angry? You don’t know me. We never met or talked about any personal matters by e-mails. Aren’t you going too far in judging me? If you were talking about your own earlier life, before you came across your Guru’s teachings, that is totally different matter. You could have said so instead of thinking something similar about me.
You did not say anything about my “rational humanist” approach, I asked twice.
There is lot more that can be said. This debate can never end. We all spoke our mind and expressed our views. Let us leave at this. There will be other times and subjects to continue debating our different viewpoints. Enough for this posting. I rest my case with you.

You dislike science. You dislike all religions as people normally understand them. You call all of them blind. You believe in your own brand of religion as you want to define it yourself. You are a poet in Gujarati too. You have a way with words. You can enter Gada saheb’s mind and read it too. You start your writings often with Love and end them with Blessings for all the ignorant souls like us. I am really impressed.
My humble request to you is to enlighten all of us on this blog and spell out exactly what REAL Knowledge is. You can teach all of us. Please do it. It appears to me that you did not properly understand the meaning of the phrase I had used. It is a very polite way of saying, “your suggestion to transform me without my asking you for that is laughable. (This is a blunt way of saying which I did not want to use originally.)

I not only understand the phrase, but also understand which is said between the line. You know how to cover the anger with the use of phrase to look polite. And I know how to uncover such hypocrisy.

તમારા મતે શું ધર્મ અને શાસ્ત્રો ને ફેકી દઈએ? તમે વિચારો આવું કરવાથી શું થાય. ધર્મ માં
સુધારો જરૂરી છે પણ તમે કહો કે ધર્મ ખોટો જ છે નકામો છે તો તેમાં જડતા નથી દેખાથી ?
હું માનું છું કે રેશ્નાલીસ્તો કૈક તો સારી જાગૃતિ લાવી રહ્યા છે. પણ તેમના માં રહેલી ધર્મ પ્રત્યેની
ઝનૂની હુમલા ના લીધે ધાર્મિક લોકો તેમના સુધારા લેતા અચકાય છે. દીપકભાઈ તમે કહો છો
કે શ્રાધ માં દૂધપાક ખાવાનું છોડી દઈએ પણ ભાદરવા માં શરીર મતે ખીર ખાવું જરૂરી છે. માટે
ઋષિમુનીઓ આને ધર્મ સાથે જોડી ને કહી દીધું કે શ્રાધ કરો અને એ નિમિતે ખીર ખાવ. બીજું
શ્રાવણ મહિના માં લોકો શિવ ને બીલી ચઢાવે છે તે પણ ખરેખર તો બીલી ના પાન પોતાના શરીરે
ઘસવા જોઈએ જેથી ચોમાસા માં જીવ જંતુ તમારાથી દુર રહે આને પણ ઋષિમુનીઓ એ ધર્મ સાથે
જોડી દઈ શિવ ને બીલી ચઢાવવા તેમ શાસ્ત્રો માં કહ્યું પણ ધર્મ માં જોડવાથી આનું આંધળું અનુકરણ થઇ ગયું
અને લોકો પૈસા મોકલી મહારાજ પાસે બીલી ચઢાવવા લાગ્યા. બીલી શંકર ભગવાનને ચઢાવવાની કઈ જરૂર નથી.
હું એ પણ માનું છું કે ધાર્મિક અંધશ્રધા ભારત માં ખુજ જ છે. એક ગામ માં ભણવા માટે શાળા એક હશે પણ ત્યાં
મંદિર ૫ હશે. અને શાળા માં માર્બલ નહિ પણ પ્લાસ્ટર હશે અને માર્બલ મંદિરો માજ હશે. લોકો
મંદિરો માં પુષ્કળ દાન આપે છે પણ તેના દસમાં ભાગનું પણ દાન શાળા માટે આપતા નથી.
લોકો ને એમ જ લાગે છે કે ભણાવવાનું કામ સરકારનું છે. તમે કોઈ પણ સંપ્રદાય જોશો તો આજ બદી છે.
સંપ્રદાય વાળા ૧૦૦ રૂપિયા જબરજસ્તી ઉઘરાવી ૧ રૂપીઓ દાન કરશે એટલે પ્રજા ખુશ

મેં તમારી એક વાતના સંદર્ભમાં એટલું જ કહ્યું છે કે સંતો મોબાઇલ, કાર, લૅપટોપ વાપરતા હોય તેને ધર્મમાં સુધારો ન કહેવાય અથવા તો ધર્મે વિજ્ઞાનને સ્વીકારી લીધું એમ ન કહેવાય.

We may have several disagreements, but i do agree with you on most of the points you mention in this comment. I truly wish that for every rupee people donate to a temple, they would donate an equal amount directly to a hospital or school. That alone would solve many ills of humanity.

ઘણીવાર ફઈઓ પણ કમાલ કરે છે. બે આંખે બાડી હોય અને નામ પાડે મીનાક્ષી. કાળી કોયલા જેવી હોય અને નામ પાડે સ્વેતા. સુબોધભાઈ તમારા ફઈબાને પણ સો સો સલામ. મને હતું અંગ્રેજીમાં લખવાનો થોડો ઘણો બોધ છે તો વાંચવાનો અને સમજવાનો પણ હશે. પણ તમારા વક્તવ્ય વાંચ્યા પછી ખબર પડીકે કે ફક્ત એક જ બોધ છે ઉલટીઓ કરવાનો અને તે પણ અંગ્રેજી નું અત્તર છાંટીને . તમારી ઉલટીનો જવાબ આપવો એ તમારી ભીતર બેઠેલા પેલા પરમાત્માનું અપમાન છે. નહીતો જવાબ આપી શકત. આભાર.

Like all else, you have completely misunderstood even the correct meaning of my Sanskrit based name. Unluckily for me, I do not have Gujarati software, to reply to you properly.
But I am not going to enter into personal diatribes like this with anyone. This is a blog for ideas, not for abuse. So I will stop here and not bother to explain the real meaning of the word or reply to your abuses. I request you not to reply to me too.

It is a well established fact that Rajneesh was an eloquent con-artist who could speak very well and impress many people, but had nothing to offer of substance. In addition to his criminal activities in India, he entered the US under false pretenses, poisoned hundreds of people, faked legal paperwork, drugged and raped teenage girls, and was eventually caught. These are indisputable facts. He was nothing but a convicted criminal who could speak very well and fool simple-minded folks. Unfortunately, he was just one of the many such conmen infesting this world. Fortunately, most of the world has already forgotten him and moved on.
To bless someone with this criminal’s blessings should be considered highly insulting!

Their belief is something they not only want, they need it.” We must serve to open the eyes of those who are as yet not true belivers.
